Allen Barteld, chief executive officer of The Associates National, a Portland agency that places attorneys, legal secretaries and other legal professionals on a contract basis, said another factor in the increasing use of "free-lance" attorneys is the large number of baby-boomer-age lawyers who want more flexibility in their lives and are more willing to work on contract or in temporary positions.
"They have significant experience, they're looking to transition out [of law firms] and can pick and choose," he said.
Barteld's firm plans to take advantage of this increasing awareness of contract lawyering and its efficiencies by opening additional offices next year, including one in California, where contract attorneys are more widely used. His agency also plans to set up a 24-hour "litigation support" service in Bend to provide secretarial, paralegal and other legal work for attorneys as "back-office" support.
